The Safe Car-Seat Lift

ErgoMama · body mechanics for new moms

The infant car seat is one of the hardest lifts your back does all day. Research measuring back-muscle activity shows the way you lift it makes a real difference. Here's the gentler way.

Get close first

Bring your body right up to the seat — against the car, next to the base. Distance is what strains your back.

Bend your knees, not your waist

Lower yourself with your legs, keeping your back tall and your chest lifted.

Hug it to your body

Hold the seat close to your middle with both hands when you can — not swinging at arm's length.

Turn with your feet

Step around to face where you're going instead of twisting through your spine mid-lift.

Rest it, don't hold it

Use the stroller, a cart, or the ground between moves. Carrying it "just for a minute" adds up.

Skip the forearm carry. Looping the handle over one forearm like a basket swings the load far from your spine and loads one side of your body — the exact pattern linked to strain.
